Police Minister Senzo Mchunu announced the fourth-quarter crime statistics last Friday, covering January to March this year.

While the data shows significant decreases in most major crime categories compared to the same period in the previous financial year, there is growing concern over the rise in sexual offences, including rape and other contact sexual crimes.

Durban and Cape Town were reported to have a high murder rate.
