The Free State is positioning itself as more than a province to travel through, with the launch of the Smart Visitor Information Centre (Smart VIC) in Parys signalling a new era of technology-driven tourism and stronger local economic opportunities. Launched at the Parys Tourism Information Centre, the Smart VIC provides visitors with convenient, up-to-date information on attractions, accommodation, restaurants, events and activities across the destination.
The initiative brings tourism and technology together to make it easier for visitors to discover what the Free State—and particularly the Fezile Dabi District—has to offer. According to the Fezile Dabi District Municipality Communication Unit, the Smart VIC is designed not only to assist tourists, but also to strengthen the local tourism economy by connecting visitors directly with tourism businesses and micro, small and medium enterprises.
These include tour operators, tourist guides, artists, crafters and farmers, creating opportunities for local enterprises to benefit from increased visitor activity. “For Fezile Dabi, the platform provides an opportunity to showcase the district’s rich mix of natural landscapes, cultural experiences, heritage sites, agricultural attractions and recreational activities,” said the municipality. By improving the visibility of attractions and promoting lesser-known destinations, the Smart VIC has the potential to encourage visitors to stay longer and explore more of the region.
Longer stays can translate into increased tourism spending in local communities, supporting businesses, creating opportunities and strengthening the district’s tourism value chain. The technology can also generate valuable visitor insights that can assist authorities and tourism stakeholders with destination planning, product development and targeted marketing. More than a digital information point, the Smart VIC represents a commitment to innovation, digital transformation and inclusive tourism development.
Its ultimate success will be measured by its ability to turn information into experiences, experiences into longer stays, and tourism activity into sustainable opportunities for local businesses and communities
