DA in the Northern Cape Calls for Enhanced Efforts to Combat Corruption

By: Matshidiso Selebeleng

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Northern Cape has pledged to continue demanding accountability and stronger measures to eliminate corruption in the public sector.

In a statement released yesterday, the party emphasisedthe need for action after Premier Zamani Saul acknowledged the issue during the presentation of the Office of the Premier's Annual Report for the 2024/25 financial year.

It was revealed that 33 officials in the provincial administration resigned rather than undergo lifestyle audits.

The DA has requested a full report, including the names and positions of these officials who chose to avoid the audits. The party stated that resignations do not absolve individuals of accountability, noting that the Northern Cape has a troubling history of senior managers enriching themselves at the expense of the provincial budget.

“We cannot allow resignations to become a loophole for evading accountability.

These officials have simply resigned to escape legal scrutiny, creating dangerous gaps in our government framework.

We can’t afford to protect such unscrupulous individuals. Therefore, we propose that the Office of the Premier adopt a legally compliant framework to restrict reappointments, blacklist those who evade lifestyle audits, and prevent them from obtaining future jobs, tenders, or contracts from the provincial government,” said the party’s MPL, Harold McGluwa.
